Nobody warns you that your first wig attempt can end with it on backwards, struggling in your bathroom at 7 am on a weekday.

Knowing where your hairline sits and how the ear tabs work sounds easy, but why does your wig keep sliding back every time you tilt your head? Hang tight; we cover how to put a wig on, styling tips, care tips, and how to make it look effortlessly natural.

How to Put a Wig on

Step by Step

  1. Flatten it out: Smooth short hair back, or braid longer hair into two low braids. Bumps under there show up on top.
  2. Cap it: Use a wig cap to smooth everything down, protect your scalp, and stop the wig sliding around.
  3. Hold, tilt, slide: Grab the wig at the back (where the tag sits), tilt your head forward, and ease it on front to back.
  4. Line it up: Ensure the front edge sits just up above your eyebrows, not further back. Nudge it side to side until your ear tabs sit level with your actual ears.
  5. Mirror check: Front, side, the awkward over-the-shoulder one. If it looks secure and sits where your real hairline would be, you're done.

This is the method specifically for wigs. Men's hair replacement systems are usually taped or bonded rather than just placed on, so if that's what you're working with, check out our guide on how to attach a men's hair replacement piece instead.

How to Make a Wig Look Natural at the Hairline

This is the part that separates “cute wig” from “wait, I never could have known!”

If you get a lace front wig:

  1. Pluck the lace: Most lace front wigs ship with way too much density at the front. Thin it out with tweezers a little at a time, until it looks like hair growing out of skin, not a wall of strands.
  2. Match the lace to your skin: Untinted lace usually reads grey or shiny under most lighting, no matter how good the wig is. Use a lace tint spray or a touch of foundation close to your tone.

For all wigs:

  1. Add a few baby hairs: Real hairlines are never a clean straight line. Gel down some wispy pieces along the edge, aiming for an uneven, almost messy look.
  2. Set it with powder, not just gel: A light dust of translucent powder over the lace minimises shine and blends it straight into your skin.
  3. Do the window test: Artificial light hides a lot. If the hairline holds up in daylight, it holds up anywhere.

Nail these details, and you've basically cracked how to make a wig look natural at the hairline.

How to Style a Wig

  1. Always use heat protectant: Spray it in before curling, straightening, or blow-drying. Skipping protection turns silky hair to straw in one afternoon.
  2. Keep the heat low: Don’t go over 180°C. Human hair holds curl and shine at low temps just fine.
  3. Style away from the base: This is where how to style a wig comes down to technique; keep hot tools off the wefts and lace. Heat applied near the base weakens the knots holding the hair in.
  4. Use lightweight products: Choose silicone-free where you can. Heavy products build up fast on hair that can’t be refreshed with naturally produced oils.
  5. Go easy on updos: While ponytails and buns are fine, avoid pulling tight at the hairline where the lace is most delicate.

How to Care for a Human Hair Wig

Treat it like your best hair day, because how to care for a human hair wig really comes down to maintenance, about 90% of it.

  1. Wash every 6 to 8 wears: Overwashing dries the hair out faster than wearing it actually does. This assumes you're taking the wig off first; if yours is taped, glued, or bonded down, this method won't apply the same way; see our guide on how to wash a wig while wearing it instead.
  2. Brush before you wet it: Wet hair stretches and snaps. Brush it dry with a wide-tooth comb, starting at the ends.
  3. Shampoo in one direction: Scrubbing in circles can cause matting. Use downward strokes only.
  4. Condition mid-lengths to ends, never the roots: Conditioner at the base weakens the knots holding each strand in.
  5. Air-dry on a wig stand: Gravity and the stand will help hold its shape and prevent frizz.
  6. Store it covered: A silk or satin bag keeps dust and friction off your wig between wears.

Which Wigs Are the Most Natural-Looking?

Lace Front Wigs

A lace front wig has a sheer strip of lace sewn along the front hairline, with the rest of the cap made from standard wefts. That sheer lace creates the illusion of hair growing straight out of your scalp, since it sits almost invisible against your skin once it’s tinted or powdered to match.

It's the go-to for anyone wearing their hair off the face, a sleek ponytail, a middle part, or pushed back from the forehead. The trade-off is that the realism is mostly concentrated at that front section, so lace fronts suit people who want a natural edge without needing to part their hair all over the place.

Mono Top Wigs

When people ask which wigs are the most natural-looking, mono top also comes up, just with a different approach. It swaps that front lace panel for fine mesh across the crown, sheer enough that you can see scalp underneath no matter where you part it. Instead of one fixed parting line, a mono top lets you shift your part left, right, or straight down the middle, and it still looks like hair growing from skin rather than sitting on a base.

It's the better pick if you switch up your style often or wear your hair away from a strict side part. It won't match a lace front for off-the-face styling, but for all-over realism at the scalp, it's hard to beat.

What Are the Different Types of Wig Caps?

A wig cap is the separate liner worn underneath, between your natural hair and the wig itself. When people ask what the different types of wig caps are, it usually comes down to two main options: nylon mesh and spandex or lycra.

Nylon Mesh Wig Caps

This standard option is what most people mean by a wig cap. Stretchy, breathable mesh flattens your hair down without trapping heat against your scalp, and is mostly one-size-fits-all.

Spandex or Lycra Wig Caps

These provide a snugger fit than mesh and are often used under tighter styles or with thicker, curlier natural hair that needs extra smoothing. It’s less breathable, so they’re better suited to shorter wear than all-day use.

How Much Are Human Hair Wigs?

Superior Hair's human hair wigs run $1,150 to $1,500 NZD, mono top and lace front alike. Shorter lengths in a solid colour sit at the bottom, around $1,150, since there's no extra processing involved. Add balayage, ombre, or highlights, and you're looking at $1,300 to $1,500, because hand-painting colour into human hair takes way more time and skill than a single flat shade.

Length pushes it up too; an 18-inch wig uses more hair than a 13-inch in the same colour, so of course it costs more. Cap construction barely factors in here; lace front and mono top fall within the same range, so pick based on how you want to style it, not on cost.

Compare that to synthetic wigs, which run cheaper upfront but need replacing every few months instead of lasting one to three years with proper care.

Another thing, salon owners get 15 to 20% off RRP through the Superior Hair trade program, worth knowing if you're buying for clients rather than yourself. And, if the wig's for medical hair loss, check whether you qualify for the Ministry of Health wig subsidy!

How are our Men's Hairpieces are attached using tape

Losing hair can be frustrating for many men.Fortunately, hair replacement wigs and toupees have come a long way in recent years. They are a great option to restore your hair, especially if you want to avoid the risks that come with surgery.  In this blog we'll be going through the process of attaching a men's hair replacement piece. Refer to the video below for the detailed process captured on video:    Step 1: Hair Template  Your custom template will be used as indication for where your hairpiece will sit.  Step 2: Shave The markings you created on the head using the template, will now be used as indication on where to clean shave on the head. Step 3: Cut Cut off any extra base, if needed. Step 4: Tape Tape the hairpiece using double sided tape. Step 6: Attach The now taped hairpiece will be attached to the clean shaven area on the man's head. Step 7: Measure Hands on the forehead can be used as a guide to make sure hairpiece is not placed too far or forawrd or too far back on head.  Step 8: Place The hairpiece will then be pressed firmly on the head to make sure it is secure. Step 8: Cut and Style  The hairpiece can then be cut and styled to the man's preference. It is recommended to cut and style after hairpiece is attached rather than prior. This is to reduce any errors in the desired final look. Step 9: Smile Now there's a big grin going from left to right as you look at yourself in the mirror with your new hairdo.  Attaching a men's hair replacement wig/toupee is a fairly clean and easy process. Remember to choose a piece that matches your hair colour and type, and make sure you took good care of it. You'll be looking your most confident self !

Our newest addition! The famous 'GENIUS WEFT'!

Our newest addition! The famous 'GENIUS WEFT'!

Our newest addition to our Weft Collection is the “Genius Weft”. It is the most premium style of weft in the hair extension market and serves to be the most preferred choice among stylists. With traditional wefts, the seams are a lot thicker, however they able to be cut. These wefts suit those that are wanting that extra thickness. Hand-Tied Weft Extensions come much thinner, so it’s easy to blend into your hair without and lumps and bumps! However, they cannot be cut, so they if they are too long, they will need to be folded over when installing. Good thing about our new Genius wefts, they are both thin AND can be cut along the seams! Making it practically invisible! Its customization abilities are why it’s such a flexible choice. The Genius Weft uses a new method of machine weaving, which allows the hair to be tightly weaved meaning no return hair! Return hair is something that is usually present in Hand-Tied Weft Extensions. For many people return hair isn’t too much of an issue, however people with sensitive scalp can be irritated by those few strands that come apart. This new machine weaving method ensures that the above doesn’t occur. Traditional wefts come much denser, not allowing for it to be stacked on top of another seamlessly or create colour blends. Hand Tied Wefts, come less dense allowing you to layer multiple wefts and create unique blends. Genius Weft allows you to have more density than the Hand Tied all while still giving you the ability to create unique colour blends and stack multiple wefts. Coming in 30+ colours, SHE Genius Weft is ready to have our stylists on chokehold!   PLEASE NOTE: We highly recommend to not allow the use of Olaplex on the band of the extensions as the active ingredients in Olaplex can break the band.
